Disruption in immunization services, even for a brief period, result in increased number of susceptible individuals and an increased risk of outbreaks of Vaccine-Preventable Diseases (VPDS) (e.g., measles, polio, diphtheria, pertussis, meningococcal disease, influenza, etc.), leading to excess morbidity and mortality. Due to the high risk associated with VPD outbreaks, WHO recommended that countries continue routine immunization services as well as vaccination campaigns wherever feasible.
