Reeling under the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, towards the end of 2020, talks were underway in India for the introduction of a COVID-19 vaccine. While the clinical trials were still ongoing, the Government of India (GoI) did the spadework needed to launch a massive immunization campaign. One of the important aspects that was given priority during this period was the strengthening of the Immunization Supply Chain (ISC) with the necessary Cold Chain Equipment (CCE) that could accommodate the COVID-19 vaccine for the 950 million target population, without affecting or compromising the vaccines administered as part of the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP).
